There was some much needed moisture this past weekend. Not enough, but it sure beat a dry wind. We’ve had plenty of that! Hopefully this moisture will create more.
The Thursday Breakaway practices at Golliher Arena will be paused for a while as clinic season has started for them. If you’re interested in riding time or private one on one lessons, call Jerry at 605-641-0698.
KPH Arena at Gillette, Wyo. will be starting their Ranch Show Series soon. The show dates are Apr. 12, May 3, and June 14. They are AQHA approved and will have ranch riding, ranch reining, working western rail and ranch trail. All levels and divisions offered. AQHA classes are $15 each with no jackpot. The KPH classes are $30 each with a jackpot. You can enter there at 8 a.m. with the show starting at 9. For more details go to www.kluzperformancehorses.com.
Also at KPH Arena, there will be a Marilyn Randall Ranch Class clinic on Apr. 13. She is the judge from the previous day’s show and judges for AQHA, NRHA, NRCHA, APHA, NSBA and FEI shows. A Sled Work Breakaway Clinic with Blake Baade will be Apr. 13 at Milestone Ranch, Letcher, S.D. It’s $200 to reserve a spot and $150 more at clinic check-in, and limited to eight riders. You can audit for $150. All ages and levels welcome. Contact Blake at 605-999-2336 or Riley at 605-359-4018.
The Kalona Spring Draft Horse Sale at Kalona, Iowa will be Apr. 14-15, 9 a.m. There will be draft and driving horses, saddle horses, new and used tack, farm antiques, harness, collars, horse drawn vehicles and implements. Equipment and harness will sell on the 14th, the stock on the 15th and there will be a draft horse pull in the evening.
SDHSRA Regional Rodeo online entries will be open Apr. 15 to 25. Entries are online only and you need to make sure you fill out the forms correctly with all the pertinent signatures. I recommend that you do it soon and not wait until 9 p.m. on Apr. 24. There’s a tutorial on the site at www.sdhsra.com.
This is a fun sounding event! The 420 Bull Riding and Easter Egg Hunt will be April 20 at the Three Mile Creek Arena, Kyle, S.D. The Easter egg hunt will be at 2 p.m. with the bull riding to follow. Entry fees are $25 for mini bulls, $50 for Jr. bulls and $100 for open bulls. You can enter there.
Asa Stathart is holding his From the Ground Up Manner and Foot Handling Clinic on Apr. 26, at NWC Indoor Arena, Powell, Wyo. The makeup date for the cancelled March 30 Jackson Youth Rodeo is Apr. 27. It will be at Newcastle, Wyo.
If you are a S.D. 4-H rodeo contestant, entry packets must be in before the May 1 deadline. Make sure you include ALL of the requested information! Again, don’t wait until the last minute. Procrastination on your part does not constitute an emergency on the part of people like the local notary.
A Rickie Fanning (used to be Engessor) Breakaway Clinic is May 16 at Thermopolis, Wyo. It’s $250/person with $100 non-refundable deposit to hold your spot. It’s for intermediate to advanced levels riders and will utilize a sled and live cattle. To sign up call 719-209-5010.
This is a ways off but always fills fast when signup opens, which it has. It’s the Becoming Champions Rodeo Bible Camp at Meeteetsee, Wyo. And will be June 9-12. It’s for ages 8-18 and will offer barrels, poles, breakaway, tie down and team roping, bull riding, bull fighting, steer riding, barebacks and saddle broncs. Call 307-868-2238 to get signed up.
